The Best Bagel in LA

By Emma Wong

Did you know the average bagel has a history as rich as its flavor? Originating in 17th-century Poland, bagels have traveled the world to become a breakfast (and anytime) staple, especially here in LA, where creativity and quality shine.

If you’re craving a bagel that’s perfectly chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside, look no further. This roundup features some of the best bagel spots I’ve discovered in Los Angeles, each offering something unique. The list is not ranked but presented in alphabetical order, so every place is a winner. Whether you’re up for a short drive or ready to explore, these spots are a must-visit for any bagel lover!

1. Brooklyn Bagel Bakery

  • Location: Downtown LA, about 15 minutes from USC

  • Price Range: $3–$10

  • Overview: A true classic, Brooklyn Bagel Bakery has been around since 1953. Known for its chewy New York-style bagels, it’s a go-to for students seeking a traditional bagel experience. Their bagels are simple and authentic, making them a satisfying choice for anyone missing the East Coast’s bagel style.

2. Calic Bagel

  • Location: Koreatown, around 10 minutes from USC

  • Price Range: $4–$8

  • Overview: Calic Bagel is a Tik Tok viral gem serving fresh, handmade bagels daily. Popular choices include their lox and cream cheese bagels, but you’ll also find some unique flavors that add a twist to the traditional. Perfect for a quick breakfast or lunch on a budget.

3. Courage Bagels

  • Location: Virgil Village, about 20 minutes from USC

  • Price Range: $6–$15

  • Overview: Courage Bagels has quickly gained a following for its unique "Montreal-style" bagels. These bagels are hand-rolled, boiled in honey water, and baked to perfection. Expect a wait, especially on weekends, but the experience and taste is well worth it.

4. Layla Bagels

  • Location: Santa Monica, about 30 minutes from USC

  • Price Range: $5–$17

  • Overview: In my opinion, Layla Bagels is a strong contender for the best bagel in LA. Their six different sourdough bagels are packed with flavor, and you can choose between open-faced options and hearty bagel sandwiches. I was initially hesitant to try their fruit-topped bagel (the pre-jam), despite all the buzz, but it turned out to be absolutely delicious. It is definitely worth a try! It’s the perfect stop in Santa Monica if you're looking for a bagel with a unique twist.

5. Maury’s

  • Location: Silver Lake, approximately 25 minutes from USC

  • Price Range: $4–$14

  • Overview: Another LA favorite, Maury’s offers hand-rolled, boiled bagels that are both chewy and satisfying. Their smoked salmon and avocado bagel is a must-try, and the cozy ambiance makes it a good spot to relax and enjoy a weekend breakfast.

6. Pop’s Bagels

  • Location: Culver City, about 20 minutes from USC

  • Price Range: $5–$11

  • Overview: Pop’s Bagels is owned by a USC alumni so I highly recommend trying it and showing your Trojan Family love! They’re beloved for their fluffy, fresh bagels and premium ingredients. You can order everything from traditional bagels with cream cheese to modern combinations. Plus, their freshly baked bagels are always a treat if you're on the Westside.

7. Yeastie Boys

  • Location: Food trucks around LA (check Instagram for locations)

  • Price Range: $8–$15

  • Overview: Yeastie Boys is known for its bold flavors and a playful approach to bagels. Serving out of various food trucks, it’s a bit of an adventure to find them, but it’s well worth it for their creative combinations like the "Lox Deluxe." Perfect for a weekend hunt if you’re feeling adventurous!

Exploring LA’s bagel scene is a fun way to take a break from campus life and enjoy some truly delicious treats. Whether you’re out for a Saturday breakfast run, in need of a pick-me-up between classes, or looking to satisfy a New York-style bagel craving, these spots are worth the trip.
